Srinagar: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday voiced concern over public playgrounds being “taken over” by security forces, warning that such actions could deprive youngsters of vital open spaces for constructive activities.
The PDP chief also called on the divisional commissioner of Kashmir to intervene.
“There is growing concern over public spaces, particularly those used by youth for sports and recreation, being occupied by security forces or police. While the Chattabal Tabela ground issue was resolved amicably with Army involvement, new cases have emerged.
“The MET (Muslim Educational Trust) custodian land at Bhagat Barzulla, a popular spot for local youth, is reportedly being claimed by police for a martyrs’ memorial. Similarly, the Zoo Ground in Sheeri, Baramulla, is said to be taken over by the CRPF,” Mehbooba Mufti wrote on X.
“Such actions risk depriving young people of the few remaining open spaces essential for healthy and constructive engagement,” she added.
The PDP president urged the divisional commissioner of Kashmir to ensure these grounds remain accessible for public and youth use.
