NEW DELHI: The Government on Tuesday informed Parliament that penalties totaling Rs 36.72 crore were imposed in 8,815 cases of fake and adulterated milk during the financial year 2024-25, reflecting a rise compared to previous years.

Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, S P Singh Baghel, stated in a written reply to the Lok Sabha that targeted enforcement and surveillance operations are conducted during peak demand and festive seasons to tackle milk adulteration.

Special drives were carried out ahead of major festivals—September 2024 before Diwali and February 2025 before Holi—periods when dairy product demand typically increases.

During 2024-25, 33,405 milk samples were tested, resulting in 12,057 cases being registered. Convictions and penalties were imposed in 8,815 cases, amounting to fines of Rs 36.72 crore.

The penalty amount has shown a consistent upward trend over the last three years, with Rs 34.83 crore imposed in 2023-24 and Rs 24.30 crore in 2022-23.
