Perplexity AI Opens Comet Browser to Everyone for Free, No Pro Subscription Needed
Perplexity AI is taking on Google Chrome by making its Comet AI web browser available to all users—no Pro subscription required. Previously, access to Comet was limited to premium users via an invite system, but now anyone can download the browser and explore its AI-powered features.
Since its launch earlier this year, Comet had a waitlist, but Perplexity has now removed that barrier for Pro users in India. This move significantly broadens its potential user base, especially given that many users access the company’s AI chatbot through their Airtel numbers.
Comet AI Browser: Features and Functionality
Comet comes with the Comet Assistant integrated into its interface, acting as a personal AI assistant. Users can ask questions about any web page, and the assistant will provide answers based on the open tabs and relevant browsing history. This functionality is similar to Google Chrome’s Gemini AI, which can perform agentic tasks, although Gemini is currently limited to users in the US.
Perplexity even attempted to acquire Chrome from Google in the past, but the offer was quickly dismissed. Recently, the company confirmed that Comet is now accessible to all Pro subscribers in India, whether they subscribe directly or via Airtel. “Comet is now available to all Pro subscribers in India — no waitlist necessary — whether they have subscribed to Perplexity Pro directly or through an Airtel subscription,” the company said.
The Rise of AI Browsers
AI-powered browsers like Comet could represent the next evolution of the internet, with other companies preparing similar offerings. Opera recently launched its Neon browser for premium users, and Firefox is expected to introduce AI-driven features in the near future. Comet is positioning itself as one of the front-runners in this emerging space.
