Jammu: Security forces have captured a pigeon carrying a threat note to blow up the Jammu railway station in the RS Pura border area of Jammu district, prompting heightened security measures, officials said.

While Pakistan has previously used balloons, flags, and pigeons to send messages across the International Border (IB), this is the first instance of a pigeon being intercepted with a written threat, they added.

Authorities said the bird, suspected to have flown in from Pakistan, was caught in Katmaria along the IB around 9 p.m. on August 18. A chit tied to its claws carried messages in Urdu and English threatening to target the Jammu railway station with an IED, with phrases such as “Kashmir Freedom” and “Time has come”.

Security agencies are investigating whether the incident was a prank or part of a larger conspiracy. However, given the prevailing threat perception, forces have stepped up vigilance around the station and railway tracks. Dog squads, bomb disposal units, and additional police personnel have been deployed.

According to experts, the pigeon may have been deliberately trained and released from across the border with the note attached. “Such incidents cannot be taken lightly,” one expert cautioned.
