Jammu: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is deeply concerned over the recent cloudburst in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Sunday after visiting victims admitted at Government Medical College Hospital here.

Singh, accompanied by Union Minister Jitendra Singh and J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, went straight to the hospital after arriving from Delhi and met 16 injured persons undergoing treatment. Doctors briefed him about their condition, and he expressed satisfaction with the medical care being provided.

The defence minister said his planned visit to the cloudburst-hit Chisoti village could not take place due to bad weather and a fresh landslide blocking the route. Chisoti, the last motorable village on the way to Machail Mata temple, was struck by the cloudburst on August 14, leaving 65 people dead, over 100 injured, and 32 still missing.

Briefing reporters before leaving for Raj Bhavan, Singh said, “The prime minister is very concerned and monitoring the situation. I had planned to visit the spot but couldn’t due to inclement weather and a landslide at Pathernaki. We will now interact with the affected people through videoconferencing.”

He also praised the doctors and hospital staff for providing effective treatment, adding that the injured were recovering well.
