CHURACHANDPUR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called on various groups to renounce violence, affirming that his government stands with the people of Manipur and aims to transform the state into a symbol of peace and prosperity.

Speaking at a public rally in Kuki-majority Churachandpur district during his first visit to the state since the ethnic unrest in May 2023, Modi highlighted the Centre’s persistent efforts to foster dialogue between the conflicting parties.

“It is unfortunate that violence occurred here. Today, I want to assure you that the Government of India is with you, and I am with you,” he said. “I urge all groups and organisations to embrace the path of peace.”

Modi emphasized that peace is essential for development and reiterated the Centre’s commitment to achieving it. He noted increased budget allocations for railway and road connectivity projects in Manipur.

“Since 2014, I have focused on improving connectivity in Manipur,” he said. “India is on its way to becoming the world’s third-largest economy, and I want the benefits of development to reach every corner of the country.”

Praising Manipur as a land of courage and valour, the PM recalled the warmth and affection he received during his journey from Imphal to Churachandpur by road.

“I spoke to displaced people, and I can say that Manipur is looking towards a new dawn. The people have chosen the path of peace,” he said.

Modi also highlighted the transformative impact of the projects unveiled during the visit, aimed at enhancing infrastructure and healthcare. “From this platform, projects worth over Rs 7,300 crore were recently announced. These initiatives will significantly improve the lives of the people of Manipur, particularly the tribal communities in the Hills,” he added.
