MANGALDOI (ASSAM): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday accused the Congress of supporting terrorists allegedly groomed by Pakistan, instead of backing the Indian Army.
Speaking at a programme in Mangaldoi, Darrang district, Modi said the grand old party had been “protecting infiltrators and anti-national forces” and asserted that the BJP would not allow such elements to seize land or alter Assam’s demography.
He specifically referred to Operation Sindoor, claiming the Congress opposed the armed forces’ efforts to dismantle terrorist infrastructure, while he credited the operation’s success to the blessings of Ma Kamakhya.
Modi also criticized a former Congress president for allegedly commenting that the BJP was “honouring singers and dancers,” after the party awarded Bharat Ratna to Bhupen Hazarika in 2019. “The wounds from the 1962 Chinese aggression are yet to heal, and this insult to Bhupen Hazarika adds salt to them,” he said. He urged the public to question Congress leaders over their treatment of Assam’s legendary singer.
Highlighting Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s work, Modi praised efforts to evict infiltrators from illegally occupied land, calling it a step toward empowering farmers and indigenous communities. “The BJP will not allow infiltrators to grab land, insult women, or alter the demography, which threatens national security,” he said. He also announced the launch of a nationwide Demography Mission.
Modi compared the Congress and BJP’s development record, noting that while Congress built only three bridges over the Brahmaputra, the BJP-led government constructed six in the last decade. He emphasized Assam’s 13% growth rate under the “double-engine” government—BJP rule at both Centre and state level—and said the region is key to India’s vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’.
The Prime Minister encouraged people to buy swadeshi goods and praised connectivity initiatives in the Northeast for boosting business and employment. “The next chapter of this century belongs to the East and Northeast,” he said.
During the programme, Modi laid foundation stones for healthcare and infrastructure projects worth ₹6,300 crore, including Darrang Medical College and Hospital, a nursing college, and a GNM school (₹570 crore investment), the 2.9 km Narengi-Kuruwa bridge (₹1,200 crore), and the 118.5 km Guwahati Ring Road connecting Assam and Meghalaya (₹4,530 crore).
Modi also engaged with attendees personally, collecting paintings offered to him, thanking donors, and requesting names and addresses for follow-up letters.
