New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday described GST 2.0 as a “double dose of support and growth” for the nation, calling it a next-generation reform aimed at advancing India’s progress in the 21st century.
His remarks came a day after the GST Council approved a comprehensive overhaul of the existing Goods and Services Tax (GST) system.
Speaking with National Teacher awardees, Modi said the reforms have added five new “gems” (panch ratna) to India’s dynamic economy. He noted that GST has been simplified, with the new rates of 5 per cent and 18 per cent set to take effect from the first day of Navratri.
“GST 2.0 is a double dose of support and growth for the nation. These next-generation reforms have been implemented to propel India forward in the 21st century. Through GST reforms, five new gems have been added to our vibrant economy,” he said.
The Prime Minister emphasized the need for timely reforms, stating, “Without timely changes, we cannot give our country its rightful place in today’s global scenario. I had mentioned from the Red Fort on 15 August that it is crucial to undertake next-generation reforms to make India self-reliant. I also promised our citizens a double dose of happiness before this Diwali and Chhath Puja.”
Modi also highlighted that under the previous Congress regime, basic household items were heavily taxed, and the BJP government has worked to ease the burden on the common man.
