Poonch, Dec 02: District Police Poonch, in close coordination with the Drug Control Authorities, sealed a medical shop in the Madana area for illegally selling Schedule H1 drugs to local youth without valid prescriptions. The shop, identified as Sheikh Medical Hall, was found in violation of drug control regulations.

Officials said that information was received regarding Zaffar Iqbal, son of Mohd Sharief and resident of Poonch, proprietor of Sheikh Medical Hall, who was allegedly selling Pregabalin capsules—a Schedule H1 controlled drug—to youth without proper medical prescription. Investigators further discovered that the chemist was not maintaining mandatory computerised sale records as required under the Drugs & Cosmetics Act.

Pregabalin, a highly sedative drug, is frequently misused by vulnerable youth, posing serious risks to public health and safety. Considering the gravity of the violation and its potential impact on society, District Police Poonch immediately referred the matter to the concerned Drug Inspector for verification.

Following due procedure, the Drug Control Department sealed the premises of Sheikh Medical Hall, Madana, and suspended its licence vide Order No. ADC/HQ/R-P/2025-26/600–603 dated 01/12/2025. The seized stock has been taken into custody for further examination.

Drug Inspector Anjali Sharma confirmed the action, stating, “Strict enforcement is necessary to prevent misuse of controlled substances. Pharmacies must adhere to regulations to safeguard public health.”

Superintendent of Police Poonch, Ramesh Angral, reiterated the district police’s commitment to curbing the illegal sale of restricted medicines. “We will continue to take strict action against those indulging in activities that endanger the health and well-being of the public, especially the youth,” he said.

Authorities added that surprise inspections will be intensified across the district to ensure compliance and prevent the misuse of Schedule H1 drugs.
