Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday said they foiled a suicide attempt in Doda district by rescuing a woman and her two minor children, who were about to jump into the Chenab river.

Acting on information, a police team from Doda station rushed to the spot and prevented the incident, saving three lives, officials said in a statement.

The woman, identified as Shamima Akhter, wife of Irfan Ahmed and a resident of Golibagh village in Doda, was later handed over to the Women Police Station for counselling and legal support.

To assist women in distress, police said helpdesks have been established in every station, in addition to a dedicated Women Police Station, providing accessible avenues for counselling, assistance, and legal recourse.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Doda, Sandeep Mehta, urged women facing domestic disputes or hardships to seek help at these centres instead of taking extreme steps.

“Help and support are always available. We appeal to the community to stay vigilant and encourage people in distress to reach out for assistance. No one is ever alone in their struggles — with awareness, compassion, and collective effort, we can build a safer and more supportive society,” Mehta said.
