Jammu: Police in Samba and Jammu districts have detained a criminal and a drug smuggler in two separate cases of repeated involvement in crime and narcotics, officials said on Thursday.

In Samba, Alex Matoo, a habitual offender with a history of theft, snatching, assault, and gang-related crimes, was booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA). Acting on a dossier submitted by police, the District Magistrate of Samba issued a detention order, following which Matoo was lodged in Poonch district jail. Multiple cases are registered against him across four police stations in Samba and Jammu, officials added.

In Jammu, police detained Chirag Attri, a notorious drug peddler, under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act. A detention order by the Divisional Commissioner led to his lodging in Udhampur district jail. Attri, against whom several NDPS cases are registered, was earlier booked under the PIT-NDPS Act in 2024 but resumed drug smuggling after release. He was again arrested for allegedly supplying drugs to local youth, police said.
