Srinagar: Police on Saturday thwarted a protest march by Congress leaders and workers demanding the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, officials said.

The demonstration was led by Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Tariq Hameed Karra. Party members had assembled at the Congress headquarters in Srinagar with the intention of marching to the divisional commissioner’s office to submit a memorandum.

However, police personnel reportedly sealed the main gate of the party office from the outside, effectively stopping the march from taking place.
