New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday praised India’s decisive response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack in Kashmir, highlighting the success of Operation Sindoor and underscoring the nation’s unity and growing self-reliance in defense.
In her address to the nation on the eve of the 79th Independence Day, the President condemned the “cowardly and utterly inhuman” killing of innocent citizens on a holiday, noting that the armed forces demonstrated “strategic clarity and technical capability” by dismantling terrorist infrastructure across the border.
Describing Operation Sindoor as a landmark moment in the global fight against terrorism, she said India’s forces had “destroyed terrorist hubs across the border with steely resolve.”
“I believe Operation Sindoor will go down in history as an example in humanity’s fight against terrorism,” she added.
President Murmu emphasized that national unity is the strongest response to those seeking to divide the country. She highlighted the role of multi-party delegations of MPs who engaged with international counterparts to explain India’s position on cross-border terrorism, reflecting the country’s collective resolve.
“The world has taken note of India’s stance: we will not be the aggressor, but we will not hesitate to retaliate in defense of our citizens,” she said.
She also hailed Operation Sindoor as proof of the success of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) initiative in defense.
“Our indigenous manufacturing has reached a critical level, making us self-sufficient in many security requirements. These are landmark achievements in India’s defense history since Independence,” the President stated.
Turning to governance, she stressed the importance of integrity and a “zero tolerance for corruption,” invoking Mahatma Gandhi’s words: “Corruption and hypocrisy ought not to be inevitable products of democracy,” urging citizens to commit to eradicating corruption.
Referring to National Handloom Day, she recalled the 1905 Swadeshi Movement championed by Gandhi to promote Indian-made goods. The President linked this spirit to initiatives like Make-in-India and Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, urging citizens to support local products.
On technology and innovation, she highlighted artificial intelligence and the government’s India-AI mission, aimed at leveraging AI for public benefit.
“Artificial intelligence is the next stage of technological advancement… Our focus is on using technology to improve governance and the lives of ordinary citizens,” she said.
President Murmu emphasized inclusive development, stating it is meaningful only when it benefits marginalized communities and creates opportunities for them.
“Development serves its purpose when it uplifts those on the margins and opens new opportunities,” she noted. She added that increasing self-reliance in all areas has boosted national confidence and accelerated India’s journey toward becoming a Viksit Bharat.
On the digital front, she lauded India’s strides in IT, noting widespread 4G connectivity, the rise of digital payments, and the success of Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT).
“India now accounts for more than half of the world’s digital transactions, fostering a vibrant digital economy that contributes significantly to GDP,” she said.
The President also highlighted progress in healthcare through Ayushman Bharat, the world’s largest healthcare scheme, which now covers over 55 crore people and extends benefits to all senior citizens above 70, irrespective of income.
Reflecting on history, she marked Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas, remembering the Partition of 1947, paying tribute to the victims of its violence and displacement.
President Murmu reiterated India’s identity as the mother of democracy, guided by constitutional pillars of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. She stressed equal dignity and opportunity for all, particularly for historically disadvantaged groups.
She praised India’s remarkable progress since 1947, noting that the country has moved from extreme poverty to becoming self-reliant and confident in its future. Looking ahead, she expressed optimism that ongoing reforms and policies provide a platform for every citizen to contribute to India’s prosperity and happiness.
