Washington: President Donald Trump on Wednesday night signed a government funding bill, bringing an end to a record 43-day shutdown that left federal employees without pay, disrupted air travel, and led to long queues at food banks.
This marks the second shutdown under Trump’s presidency, one that deepened partisan rifts in Washington as the administration took unusual unilateral steps — from cancelling projects to attempting to dismiss federal employees — to pressure Democrats to soften their stance.
The bill was signed just hours after the House approved it in a largely party-line vote of 222–209, following the Senate’s passage of the measure on Monday.
