Jammu: In a major action against narcotics trafficking, police on Thursday attached properties worth Rs 53 lakh belonging to a drug peddler in Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba district.

Officials said the seized assets include a single-storey residential house and a cattle shed owned by Mohammad Baru, a resident of Laswara in Bishnah, currently living in Bari Brahmana. The attachment was carried out under provisions of the NDPS Act and is linked to cases registered at the Bari Brahmana police station.

Police said the assets were found to have been illegally acquired through proceeds of drug trafficking. During the investigation, Rs 16.58 lakh in cash was also recovered from Baru, taking the total value of the seized assets and cash to around Rs 70 lakh.

Baru is a habitual offender and has been involved in at least 12 criminal cases, including three NDPS cases currently under trial in Samba and Jammu districts, officials said.

Police added that the action underscores their continued efforts to crack down on the drug menace in the region.
