Chandigarh: Punjab Police on Thursday said they have dismantled a cross-border arms smuggling network, arresting six individuals in the operation. Authorities also recovered six sophisticated firearms and ₹5.75 lakh in cash, police said.
According to Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, the syndicate was led by Mehakpreet Singh, also known as Rohit, under instructions from foreign-based handlers. Multiple recoveries were made at different stages of the investigation conducted by the Amritsar police.
“Pargat Singh was first arrested with two weapons from cross-border consignments. Further investigation led to the apprehension of Ajaybir Singh, Karanbir Singh, and Shri Ram, along with additional firearms,” DGP Yadav stated in a post on X.
Mehakpreet, identified as the kingpin, was later arrested in Goa with three weapons. The proceeds from the arms trade were reportedly routed through hawala channels, leading to the arrest of Dinesh Kumar with ₹5.75 lakh in hawala funds.
A case has been registered at Gate Hakima police station in Amritsar. “Investigation is ongoing to trace the network’s links, and more arrests and recoveries are expected,” Yadav added.
