Chandigarh: Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Monday visited flood-hit areas in Punjab and urged both the state and central governments to ensure timely relief and compensation for affected families.
“The floods have devastated Punjab. Yesterday, I met villagers in Ghonewal—homes destroyed, fields washed away, lives shattered. The pain in their eyes is unmistakable, yet their spirit remains unbroken,” Gandhi said.
He emphasized that relief must reach victims without delay. “Both the state and central governments must, under all circumstances, ensure immediate delivery of relief packages and compensation. In this tragedy, I stand firmly with every affected family. I will amplify their voices and remain committed to ensuring they receive all possible assistance.”
During his visit, Gandhi also reviewed relief measures. The Congress party, in a post on X, said: “Leader of Opposition Shri @RahulGandhi met affected families in Punjab’s flood-hit areas and took stock of ongoing relief efforts. The devastating floods have ruined thousands of lives, caused heavy losses to property, and forced many to live in relief camps.”
“The situation is dire. At this difficult time, every Congress worker stands with Punjab. We appeal to all to extend every possible help to flood-affected families. Together, we must overcome this disaster,” the party added.
According to the latest flood report, nearly 1.98 lakh hectares of crops have been damaged across Punjab. Major losses have been reported in Gurdaspur (40,169 hectares), Patiala (17,690 hectares), Tarn Taran (12,828 hectares), Fazilka (25,182 hectares), Ferozepur (17,257 hectares), and Kapurthala (17,574 hectares), among other districts.
Punjab Revenue, Rehabilitation and Disaster Management Minister Hardeep Singh confirmed that the death toll from the floods has risen to 56 statewide.
