SRINAGAR: The Ministry of Railways has approved two significant projects in Jammu and Kashmir: a new 40.2 km Baramulla–Uri railway line and the doubling of the 73.5 km Qazigund–Budgam stretch.

The Baramulla–Uri line will extend rail connectivity to the border town of Uri near Kaman Post. The project, which includes three Road Under Bridges and nine Road Over Bridges, aims to provide all-weather access to a region often cut off during winter. It also holds strategic importance, as Baramulla and Uri host major Army establishments close to the border. The line will be constructed as a new single Broad-Gauge track, requiring fresh land acquisition.

The Qazigund–Budgam doubling project is designed to ease congestion on the existing single line up to Baramulla. With the Katra–Banihal section expected to be commissioned in 2025, the entire Kashmir rail corridor will be fully integrated with the national network, boosting both passenger and freight movement. The doubling will also facilitate smooth operation of military special trains transporting troops and equipment.
