SRINAGAR: Union Minister of State (MoS) Ramdas Athawale on Saturday said Jammu and Kashmir is expected to regain its statehood soon.
Although he did not specify a timeline, Athawale expressed confidence, saying, “I believe it will happen soon.” He added, “J-K should get back its statehood as soon as possible, and there is a strong demand for it.”
Speaking to reporters, he praised voter participation in last year’s Assembly elections, noting that turnout exceeded 60 percent—higher than in many other states. “I thank the people of J-K for not succumbing to fear. When Union Home Minister Amit Shah abrogated Article 370, he assured that J-K would regain its statehood, and I believe the Government of India can make that decision soon,” Athawale said.
On the recent floods in Jammu, he assured that the central government would support the state. “There have been huge losses due to heavy rains and flooding. The state government will first assess the situation, and the Centre will do everything possible to provide assistance,” he said.
Regarding Shah’s visit to Jammu after the floods, Athawale said, “He has visited J-K many times whenever needed, focusing on its overall development. During the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, he reached within hours. Despite attempts to destabilize the economy, tourism has since rebounded.”
Athawale also addressed the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists. He said India responded decisively through Operation Sindoor, neutralizing the terrorists. “Pakistan tried to derail the local economy, but we taught them a lesson. Our government’s response was firm. Now, we seek peace and want Kashmir and Jammu to remain safe,” he added.
Clarifying the objectives of Operation Sindoor, Athawale said, “The mission, led by PM Modi, aimed to eliminate terrorists and their infrastructure. It was not halted due to external influence; our goal was achieved.”
He highlighted the rapid development in J-K post-Article 370 abrogation. “PM Modi has promised continued support to boost development, create employment, and attract industries. The government is encouraging industrialists to set up businesses, providing opportunities for the youth. J-K is our own, and it is our duty to ensure social and economic justice for its people,” Athawale said.
