SRINAGAR: Jal Shakti Minister Javed Ahmed Rana today carried out a detailed review of the ongoing upgradation works at the Nishat and Alusteng Water Filtration Plants. These upgrades aim to strengthen Srinagar’s potable water infrastructure and ensure a continuous supply of safe drinking water to the city’s residents.

During his visit, the Minister evaluated the current status of potable water availability, filtration processes, and progress on under-construction filtration units, including the 3.0 MGD (Million Gallons per Day) plant at Nishat and the 5.5 MGD plant at Alusteng.

He inspected key operational areas such as water reservoirs, pump rooms, testing laboratories, and storage facilities. Officials informed him that these plants serve a vital role in delivering treated drinking water to a large portion of Srinagar’s population, with upgradation work advancing steadily.

Minister Rana stressed the importance of adhering strictly to project timelines and called for the immediate procurement of alum, an essential coagulant used in water filtration, to maintain optimal treatment efficiency. He warned that any avoidable delays could compromise service quality and diminish public confidence.

Urging officials to implement modern best practices, the Minister emphasized regular maintenance and effective management to guarantee a continuous supply of high-quality water. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment, under the leadership of Omar Abdullah, to providing safe and clean drinking water to every household across Jammu & Kashmir.

“Access to potable water is fundamental to public health, economic development, and social welfare. Our administration is dedicated to investing in advanced infrastructure, incorporating cutting-edge filtration technologies, and enhancing operational standards to ensure reliable and safe water supply for both urban and rural communities,” he stated.

While inspecting the reservoirs, Rana highlighted the region’s abundant water resources and stressed the collective responsibility to protect them.

“The Valley is endowed with plentiful water reserves. It is the shared duty of the government, local bodies, and citizens alike to safeguard these resources from pollution, overuse, and neglect,” he said.

Appreciating the efforts of the Jal Shakti Department, he called for strict hygiene protocols around treatment plants and urged officials to eliminate any potential contamination sources nearby. He further emphasized the need for efficient water management practices and reiterated the government’s resolve to ensure clean water reaches every household.

The Minister was accompanied by the Chief Engineer of Jal Shakti Kashmir, Superintending Engineer of the Hydraulic Circle Srinagar, Executive Engineers, and other senior officials. The Chief Engineer briefed him on the progress and assured timely completion of the upgradation projects.
