Jammu, March 7, 2025 – The Yuva Rajput Sabha-J&K (YRS) today expressed its strong condemnation and deep resentment over the derogatory remarks made by Surinder Choudhary, the Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, regarding Maharaja Hari Singh Ji, the last ruler of Jammu & Kashmir. Choudhary’s recent statements referring to Maharaja Hari Singh as a “dictator” and calling those involved in the 1931 uprising “martyrs” have sparked outrage, as they overlooked the violence and atrocities committed during that period, including the killing of Kashmiri Pandits, burning their properties, and committing crimes against women.
In response to these offensive remarks, the Yuva Rajput Sabha organized a massive protest near the statue of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji, blocking the Tawi Bridge for several hours. Thousands of Rajput youth actively participated, showing their strong disapproval of the Deputy CM’s comments.
Raghubir Singh, Chairman of the Yuva Rajput Sabha, stated that while Surinder Choudhary issued an apology for his remarks, the Sabha is adamant that such comments are completely unacceptable. The YRS condemns all derogatory statements against Maharaja Hari Singh Ji and the Dogra community. Singh warned that any further attempts to tarnish the legacy of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji or insult Dogra pride would not be tolerated, and leaders who make such remarks would face severe consequences.
Vikram Singh Vicky, President of YRS, voiced his outrage, saying, “The ill-informed and inflammatory remarks made by Surinder Choudhary in the Assembly are absolutely unacceptable. Maharaja Hari Singh made monumental contributions to the state, such as declaring Urdu as the official language, implementing social, religious, and legal reforms, and building key institutions like banks, schools, hospitals, and courts that continue to benefit the people of Jammu & Kashmir. His vision for an inclusive and diverse Jammu & Kashmir is often ignored by those who seek political gain. We must move beyond outdated political narratives that continue to divide the state.”
Vicky also criticized the selective focus on the events of 1931, which saw anti-national elements involved in violent protests. He argued that this selective narrative is being manipulated for political purposes, further fueling division and violence in the region.
Rajan Singh Happy, Ex-President of YRS, expressed his disappointment, stating, “After 75 years of independence, it is disheartening to see some elements continuing to distort history by glorifying those responsible for violence and chaos in 1931. Maharaja Hari Singh worked tirelessly for the betterment of Jammu & Kashmir, establishing governance systems that were ahead of their time. We must focus on the real issues facing the region, not on distorted histories.”
The Yuva Rajput Sabha demands that the Jammu & Kashmir government and its representatives refrain from making such divisive and derogatory statements in the future. These remarks only serve to create unrest in an already sensitive region. The Sabha is determined to protect the legacy of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji and will not tolerate any efforts to undermine his reputation or the pride of the Dogra community.
