THANE: A 66-year-old retired government employee from Thane district has allegedly been defrauded of ₹2.85 crore after falling for a scam promising high returns on share investments, police said on Wednesday.
The victim, a resident of Vishnu Nagar in Dombivli, lost the amount over a span of two months.
According to the complaint, the senior citizen was contacted by individuals claiming to represent an investment firm and a reputed securities trading company. They convinced him to invest ₹2.85 crore, assuring substantial profits.
The funds were transferred to multiple bank accounts as instructed by the alleged scammers, an official stated.
When the promised returns failed to materialize, the victim tried to reach out to the callers. “At first, the accused gave vague responses and eventually stopped responding altogether,” the official added.
On July 14, the Vishnu Nagar police registered a case under the Information Technology Act following the victim’s complaint. An investigation is currently underway.
