Rs 2,000 Notes Worth ₹5,817 Crore Still in Circulation: RBI

Mumbai: High-value ₹2,000 currency notes worth ₹5,817 crore remain in circulation, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Saturday.

The RBI had announced the withdrawal of ₹2,000 denomination notes from circulation on May 19, 2023, while clarifying that the notes would continue to remain legal tender.

As per the central bank’s latest update, the total value of ₹2,000 banknotes in circulation has dropped sharply from ₹3.56 lakh crore — recorded on May 19, 2023, when the withdrawal was announced — to ₹5,817 crore as of October 31, 2025.

“Thus, 98.37 per cent of the ₹2,000 banknotes in circulation as on May 19, 2023, have since been returned,” the RBI said in its statement.

The facility for exchanging ₹2,000 notes has been available at the 19 issue offices of the RBI since the withdrawal announcement. From October 9, 2023, these offices also began accepting deposits of ₹2,000 notes directly into bank accounts.

Additionally, members of the public can send their ₹2,000 notes via India Post from any post office in the country to RBI issue offices for credit into their bank accounts.

The RBI’s 19 issue offices are located in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram.

The central bank said it will continue to release periodic updates on the status of the ₹2,000 note withdrawal.
