Kyiv,: Overnight Russian missile and drone strikes on Ukraine killed at least three people and injured 17 others, local officials reported on Saturday.
In the capital, Kyiv, one person was killed and ten others wounded in a ballistic missile attack early Saturday, according to Timur Tkachenko, head of the city’s military administration. Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said three of the injured were hospitalized.
“Explosions in the capital. The city is under ballistic attack,” Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram during the assault.
In the Dnipropetrovsk region, two people were killed and seven others injured, acting regional governor Vladyslav Haivanenko said. The strikes damaged apartment buildings, private homes, an outbuilding, a shop, and at least one vehicle.
Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched nine missiles and 62 drones, of which Ukrainian air defences intercepted four missiles and 50 drones.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed its air defences downed 121 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory overnight.
The escalation followed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s call on Friday for the United States to widen sanctions on Russian oil, urging restrictions to cover the entire sector, and for Washington to supply long-range missiles to strike back at Russia.
Zelenskyy was in London for talks with two dozen European leaders who pledged continued military support to help Ukraine defend itself if a ceasefire is reached in the more than three-year conflict.
Hosted by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the meeting sought to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin, building on recent measures that included new rounds of US and European sanctions targeting Russia’s key oil and gas revenues.
Discussions also focused on protecting Ukraine’s power grid from ongoing drone and missile attacks as winter nears, enhancing air defences, and providing longer-range missiles capable of striking deep inside Russian territory.
Zelenskyy has specifically appealed for Tomahawk missiles from the United States—an idea that US President Donald Trump has reportedly considered.
