Also inaugurates newly constructed Science Block, Badminton Hall, and other facilities
ANANTNAG: Minister for Health & Medical Education, Social Welfare, and Education, Sakeena Itoo, yesterday addressed the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of Shaheed Himayun Muzamil Memorial Government Degree College (GDC), Anantnag, marking 75 years of academic excellence and the institution’s significant contribution to higher education in South Kashmir.
The event was attended by MLA Kulgam, M.Y. Tarigami; MLA Anantnag-West, Abdul Majid Bhat Larmi; MLA Shangus–Anantnag East, Reyaz Ahmad Khan; MLA Bijbehara–Srigufwara, Dr. Bashir Ahmad Shah Veeri; MLA Kokernag, Zafar Ali Khatana; Additional Chief Secretary Higher Education, Shantmanu; Director Colleges, Prof. Sheikh Aijaz; Principal Prof. Mushtaq Ahmad Malik, along with distinguished alumni, faculty members, district officers, and a large gathering of students.



Addressing the audience, the Minister lauded the college’s remarkable transformation from a modest institution into one of the region’s leading centres of learning. She said the college has played a pivotal role in nurturing talent, fostering critical thinking, and contributing to the socio-economic development of the region.
“The Platinum Jubilee of this historic institution is not only a celebration of its illustrious past but also a reaffirmation of our collective resolve to build a progressive, knowledge-driven society,” she said.
Highlighting the government’s initiatives, the Minister noted that over the last year, under the leadership of Omar Abdullah, significant accountability and reforms have been introduced in the higher education sector across Jammu and Kashmir. She emphasized that education remains a top priority, especially in rural and far-flung areas, adding that more than 140 Assistant Professors have been posted in peripheral colleges to meet the academic needs of youth.
She further stated that Government Colleges across J&K have witnessed a 12 percent rise in enrolment over the past year, reflecting the administration’s commitment to strengthening public education. She also mentioned the establishment of several new hostel facilities aimed at supporting students from remote and economically weaker backgrounds.
The Minister acknowledged the college’s legacy of producing distinguished individuals who have made notable contributions in various fields. Several MLAs also addressed the gathering, highlighting the institution’s role in strengthening education in South Kashmir.
The Additional Chief Secretary, Higher Education, and the College Principal also delivered remarks, outlining various academic advancements and infrastructural achievements.
Earlier, Minister Sakeena Itoo inaugurated the new Science Block, Badminton Hall, and canteen. She said the Science Block—equipped with modern laboratories and smart classrooms—will enhance academic and research opportunities for students. The new sports and welfare facilities, she added, reflect the government’s commitment to promoting holistic development.
During her interaction with students and faculty, the Minister encouraged the adoption of innovative teaching practices, research-oriented learning, and adherence to values of discipline and excellence. She appreciated the college administration for sustaining academic vibrancy and introducing career-oriented programs.
On the occasion, the Minister also felicitated meritorious students, sportspersons, and achievers from various fields, and released multiple books authored by the college faculty. A documentary showcasing the 75-year academic journey of the institution was also screened.
