Highlights Role of Youth in Combating Drug Abuse and Other Social Challenges

SRINAGAR: Minister for Health & Medical Education, Social Welfare, and Education, Sakeena Itoo, today flagged off the 5-KM Red Run 2025 from Foreshore Road, Srinagar, aimed at raising awareness about HIV/AIDS and promoting healthy, stigma-free living.

The event, organised by the Jammu & Kashmir AIDS Control Society (JKACS) in collaboration with the University of Kashmir, sought to spread awareness about HIV prevention and challenge social taboos surrounding the disease.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Sakeena Itoo underscored the need for collective community action to eliminate stigma and enhance public understanding of HIV/AIDS. She commended JKACS for engaging students and educational institutions in awareness and health promotion activities.

“The youth of Jammu and Kashmir have a crucial role in eliminating the drug menace and addressing other societal issues. Their enthusiasm and participation in today’s run reflect their dedication to spreading awareness and building a compassionate society,” the Minister said.

Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. Nilofer Khan, and Project Director, JKACS, Dr. Jehangir Bakshi, also addressed the participants, highlighting the importance of sustained youth engagement and community-led campaigns to achieve the goal of an AIDS-free Jammu & Kashmir.

The 5-kilometer Red Run began at the picturesque Foreshore Road and concluded at the University of Kashmir, drawing over 500 participants from various colleges across Srinagar.

In addition, a 2-kilometer Walkathon was organized by JKACS in collaboration with the Dean Students Welfare, University of Kashmir, with the participation of more than 300 university students. The walk symbolized unity, compassion, and shared responsibility in combating HIV/AIDS and promoting inclusivity.

Winners of the Red Run were felicitated and awarded, recognizing both their sporting excellence and commitment to the cause.

The Red Run 2025 and Walkathon served as a powerful testament to collaboration between government institutions, academia, and the community, reaffirming the importance of physical well-being, awareness, and preventive education in the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS across Jammu and Kashmir.
