New Delhi: Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Thursday administered the oath of office to newly elected Rajya Sabha members Rajinder Gupta and Sat Paul Sharma.
Gupta, representing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was elected to the Upper House from Punjab, while Sharma of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took oath as a member from Jammu and Kashmir.
The ceremony was held at Parliament House, where Gupta took the oath in Punjabi and Sharma in Hindi.
An industrialist by profession, Gupta was nominated by AAP, which governs Punjab. Sharma, a chartered accountant and president of the BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir unit, has previously served as a cabinet minister in the erstwhile J&K government.
In 2014, Sharma was elected as an MLA from the Jammu West constituency, winning by a margin of 51,000 votes — the highest at the time.
BJP President J. P. Nadda, Union Minister Jitendra Singh, and the party’s J&K in-charge Tarun Chugh attended the swearing-in ceremony, which was also witnessed by the families of both MPs.
