NEW DELHI: Satellite broadband services in India will commence once companies finalize their rollout plans and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) determines spectrum prices, Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Thursday.

Addressing reporters at the India Mobile Congress 2025, Scindia said that two players have already been granted licenses for satellite communication (Satcom) services, while a Letter of Intent (LoI) has been issued to a third.

“The rollout timeline depends on how swiftly the companies execute their strategies. The only pending matter is the finalization of spectrum pricing by Trai,” the minister noted.

Public anticipation around Satcom services is rising, with major global and domestic players—including Elon Musk’s Starlink, Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb, and Reliance Jio-SES—vying for a share of India’s satellite broadband market.

The government has already issued permits to Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio-SES, and extended an LoI to Starlink.

On a separate note, Scindia clarified that the government has no plans to increase its stake in the financially troubled telecom operator Vodafone Idea.
