NEW DELHI: Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Information Technology, Transport, Youth Services and Sports, Satish Sharma, today met Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, in New Delhi to discuss measures aimed at strengthening sports infrastructure, promoting youth engagement, and fostering athletic excellence across Jammu & Kashmir.

During the meeting, Satish Sharma presented a detailed memorandum outlining key proposals for developing modern sports facilities, supporting athletes, and expanding grassroots participation in line with the National Sports Policy 2025 and the J&K Sports Policy 2022. He reiterated the UT Government’s commitment to transforming Jammu & Kashmir into a vibrant centre of sports and youth empowerment.

Emphasizing the transformative role of sports in promoting peace, unity, and integration, Satish Sharma said, “Jammu & Kashmir stands at a defining stage in its sporting journey. With continued support from the Centre, we can channelize youth potential, nurture emerging talent, and position the region as a model of sporting excellence and national unity.”

The Minister sought the Union Government’s assistance in fast-tracking key projects, including the establishment of a National Winter Sports Centre of Excellence at Gulmarg, modernization of district stadiums with all-weather facilities, and development of sports amenities at the panchayat level to ensure equitable access for rural youth.

He also proposed the expansion of Khelo India grassroots programs, enhancement of scholarship and financial aid schemes for athletes, integration of sports science and physiotherapy in training systems, and promotion of public-private partnerships for facility management and maintenance.

To promote sports-linked tourism and international exposure, Satish Sharma urged the hosting of international winter sports events at Gulmarg, highlighting its potential to position Jammu & Kashmir as a premier destination for winter and adventure sports.

The Minister further requested the early release of ₹103.82 crore for critical sports infrastructure projects under Khelo India to expedite ongoing and upcoming initiatives. He also emphasized the need for dedicated funding to promote sports in rural areas and allocate resources directly to panchayats across the Union Territory.

Reaffirming the Government’s resolve, Satish Sharma stated, “Under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, we are determined to build an inclusive, self-sustaining sports ecosystem that empowers our youth and strengthens the spirit of national integration.”

The Union Minister assured that a new policy to promote sports in rural areas will soon be framed and funds for procuring sports equipment will be provided to support the initiative.
