New Delhi, Nov 27: The Supreme Court has sought an explanation from Indian Railways on why accident insurance cover is extended only to passengers purchasing tickets online, leaving those who buy tickets offline without similar protection.

A bench of Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and K. Vinod Chandran raised the query after being informed that the insurance cover, meant to safeguard passengers in the event of accidents, is presently limited to online ticket buyers.

Additional Solicitor General Vikramjit Banerjee, appearing for the Railways, was directed to clarify the rationale behind this disparity. The Court also observed that the Railways should prioritize safety of tracks and railway crossings as a fundamental measure.

The matter has been listed for further hearing in January 2026, with Railways expected to provide a detailed response on whether accident insurance can be extended to all passengers irrespective of the mode of ticket purchase.
