New Delhi, Nov 15:

The Election Commission of India has informed the Supreme Court that clear instructions have already been issued regarding the use of Aadhaar. The Commission emphasized that Aadhaar is to be treated strictly as proof of identity and not as proof of citizenship.

In its submission, the Commission clarified that this distinction is critical to ensure compliance with constitutional provisions and to avoid any misinterpretation in the electoral process. Officials reiterated that Aadhaar linkage initiatives are aimed at strengthening voter identification mechanisms, not determining citizenship status.

The Commission assured the Court that necessary guidelines have been circulated to all state election authorities and that awareness measures are being taken to prevent misuse or confusion. It further underlined its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the electoral rolls while respecting the rights of citizens.

The matter is currently under consideration by the Supreme Court, which is examining petitions related to Aadhaar’s role in electoral processes.
