Doda: A prohibitory order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) remains in force in Bhalessa, Doda district, Jammu and Kashmir, on Friday following the arrest of AAP MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA).

The restrictions were imposed amid protests over Malik’s detention. On Thursday, the administration allowed a two-hour relaxation for residents to purchase essential items from local markets, following requests from locals to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM).

Local social worker Rishi Kumar Kaushal told reporters here. “We approached the SDM as our roads were damaged, and it was difficult to buy flour and rice. The administration responded and opened a market.” He added that residents are also seeking the reopening of other markets and the restoration of internet and telecommunication services.

“Now, we are requesting that another market be opened and mobile and internet services resume. We hope for normalcy ahead of our festivals and Yatras and urge everyone to remain peaceful,” Kaushal said.

DPAP block president Abdul Majeed expressed gratitude to the administration for the relaxation, stating, “We discussed issues regarding telecommunication, ration, electricity, water supply, and road access. We are thankful to the administration and hope further relaxations will be granted in the future.”

Earlier, Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban Range DIG Sridhar Patil said the administration is working to restore normalcy and has held discussions with the public to address concerns.

“We met with Doda residents to maintain peace in the district. After detailed discussions, we are on track to resolve their problems and restore normalcy,” Patil said.

The DIG also reported incidents of stone pelting in some areas and an explosion-like sound in the morning. “Tear gas was used in certain places, but major damage was averted. The explosion incident, reported around 10:30–11:00 AM, is under investigation. Two individuals are under inquiry, and action will follow based on findings,” he added.

Patil thanked residents for supporting the administration and helping maintain communal harmony.

Tension in Doda has persisted since the arrest of AAP MLA Mehraj Malik under the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act, 1978, for activities deemed prejudicial to public order.
