New York: A senior US State Department official reiterated on Wednesday that Kashmir is a “direct issue” between India and Pakistan, stressing that Washington has no intention of asserting itself in the matter.
The official underlined that it has been a “longstanding” US policy to view Kashmir as an issue strictly between the two South Asian neighbours. However, if invited, the US is willing to extend its good offices to facilitate dialogue.
“President Trump already has enough crises on his hands. We leave the Kashmir issue to India and Pakistan to resolve. We have no interest in asserting ourselves between them,” the official told reporters at a briefing.
In his address to the UN General Assembly, President Trump claimed credit for helping ease tensions between India and Pakistan, noting that the US had “absolutely helped broker” the ceasefire during the crisis.
India, meanwhile, has consistently maintained that issues with Pakistan — particularly those linked to terrorism — must be resolved bilaterally, without third-party involvement.
