As Kashmir prepares to enter Chillai-Kalan, the harshest 40-day winter period, the Meteorological Department has forecast a spell of rain and snow across the Valley, bringing an end to the prolonged dry conditions witnessed over the past several weeks.
According to weather officials, a western disturbance is expected to affect Jammu and Kashmir from December 20–21, coinciding with the onset of Chillai-Kalan on December 21. The system is likely to bring light to moderate rain and snowfall in the plains, including Srinagar, while higher reaches such as Gulmarg, Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal and parts of north and central Kashmir may receive moderate to heavy snowfall.
The MeT department has also warned of a sharp dip in temperatures during this period, with night temperatures expected to fall further below the freezing point. The cold conditions, coupled with snowfall, may disrupt road connectivity in hilly areas and affect air and rail operations.
Chillai-Kalan marks the coldest phase of winter in Kashmir and traditionally witnesses frequent snowfall and severe cold waves. During this period, water bodies often freeze, and heating needs rise sharply across the Valley.
While the approaching precipitation may pose short-term challenges, experts say the snowfall is crucial for replenishing water resources, sustaining rivers and lakes, and supporting agriculture and hydropower generation in the coming months.
Authorities have advised residents, travelers and transport operators to remain cautious, especially in snow-prone areas, and to follow official advisories during the upcoming weather spell.
