Srinagar, Dec 03: The cold wave tightened its grip over Kashmir as temperatures dipped further across the Valley. Srinagar recorded a minimum of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius, making it one of the coldest nights of the season so far.

Shopian remained the coldest district, with the mercury plunging to minus 5.9 degrees Celsius. Other parts of the Valley also witnessed sub-zero temperatures, intensifying the chill and forcing residents indoors during late evening and early morning hours.

Officials from the Meteorological Department said the prevailing dry weather conditions have led to sharp falls in night temperatures. They added that the cold wave is likely to continue, with no major snowfall forecast in the immediate future.

Locals reported frozen water pipes and thin layers of ice forming on roads and rooftops, a common sight during peak winter in Kashmir. The biting cold has also increased demand for heating appliances and firewood, while early morning fog has affected visibility in several areas.

Authorities have urged people to take precautions against the severe cold, particularly vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children. The ongoing chill is expected to persist until a fresh western disturbance brings relief in the form of snowfall or rain.
