Sopore Police Bust Major Drug Smuggling Attempt, Seize 54 Kgs of Poppy Straw
Sopore: In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, Sopore Police intercepted a major consignment of contraband poppy straw during a naka check at Sofi Hamam Road in Tarzoo.
Police officials stated that a load carrier, bearing registration number JK04B-9881 and traveling from Nigli to Chankhan, was stopped for routine inspection. Upon thorough search, authorities recovered 54 kilograms of poppy straw from the vehicle.
The driver, identified as Javaid Ahmad Dar, son of Gh. Mohi-ud-Din Dar of Chankhan, Sopore, was taken into custody immediately. A case under FIR No. 124/2025, U/S 8/15 of the NDPS Act, has been registered at Police Station Tarzoo. Investigations are underway to trace the full supply chain and networks linked to the seized consignment.
Terming the operation a “major success,” Sopore Police reiterated their zero-tolerance policy against drug smuggling and trafficking. “No one involved in drug trafficking will be spared. Our action will remain strong, swift, and uncompromising,” the police said in an official statement.
Authorities also urged the public to stay vigilant and share information about any drug-related activities to help build a drug-free Sopore.
