Srinagar-Leh highway closed after fresh snowfall in Ganderbal
GANDERBAL: The Srinagar-Leh highway has been closed for traffic following fresh snowfall in the higher reaches of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, particularly at Zojila, Sonamarg, Minimarg, and Drass, officials said on Wednesday.
According to officials, snowfall began around 6 PM on Tuesday in these health resort areas, leading to a sharp drop in temperature and slippery road conditions. As a precautionary measure, authorities immediately suspended vehicular movement to prevent accidents.
Traffic Police sources said several vehicles were stranded on both sides of the highway after the closure. “Nearly nine inches of snow were recorded at Zojila and around five inches at Sonamarg,” an official confirmed.
The Meteorological Department had earlier predicted light to moderate snowfall in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir — a forecast that came true with Wednesday’s spell.
Meanwhile, authorities have urged travellers to avoid the route until snow clearance operations are completed and the highway is declared safe for movement.
