Srinagar: Several areas of Budgam district in Jammu and Kashmir were flooded after the Jhelum River breached its banks, prompting the Srinagar administration to issue an evacuation advisory for residents in low-lying and vulnerable areas.
“District Administration Srinagar has reported a breach at Shalina in Budgam. As a precautionary measure, residents of Lasjan, Soiteng, Nowgam, Vyethpora, Golpora, Padshahibagh, and Mehjoornagar are advised to evacuate and move to safer locations,” an official spokesperson said.
Relief centres have been established for the displaced, with nodal officers appointed from both the district administration and the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to coordinate assistance. Announcements have also been made through local committees, mosques, and police authorities to alert residents.
Meanwhile, downstream areas of the Jhelum witnessed some relief as water levels began to recede from 6 am Thursday. However, the river continues to flow above the danger mark at Sangam in south Kashmir and at Ram Munshi Bagh in Srinagar.
