This heat in Srinagar comes after a very hot June, which was the hottest in almost 50 years

Srinagar recorded its hottest July day in more than 70 years on Saturday, as temperatures reached 37.4 degrees Celsius. Weather officials said this was the highest July temperature since 1953, and the third-highest since records began in 1892.

This heat comes after a very hot June, which was the hottest in almost 50 years. In June 2025, Srinagar had an average maximum temperature of 33°C, which is about 3°C above normal.

On 10 days, temperatures crossed 34°C, reaching 36°C on 20 and 24 June, and 35°C on several other days. The minimum temperature also stayed high at 18.2°C, making it harder for people to stay comfortable.

Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Department, confirmed that June was the hottest since 1978. He said the prolonged dry spell and low humidity are the main reasons for the rising temperatures.

“During such dry conditions, both temperature and humidity levels rise sharply, making the weather unbearable,” he explained.

The extreme heat is raising concerns about changing weather patterns in Kashmir. Experts also attributed the rise in temperatures to global warming. Summers in Srinagar are usually mild, but now extreme heat events are becoming more common.

Experts warned that this could be a sign of climate change. If this trend continues, it may affect important areas like farming and tourism, which rely on a stable climate.

There may be a short break from the heat in the coming days, but health experts and authorities are advising people to stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of water, and take steps to avoid heat-related illness.

Given the rise in temperatures, the school education department may extend the summer holiday; however, the final decision is pending.
