Steve Smith has extended an open offer to mentor struggling teammate Sam Konstas, as the young opener battles for form and his spot in Australia’s Ashes squad.

Despite showing glimpses of promise, Konstas’ inconsistent performances — highlighted by risky shot selections and a shortage of runs — have fueled debate over Australia’s opening options ahead of the five-Test series against England, beginning November 21 in Perth.

The New South Wales batter reignited concerns about his approach on Monday when he was bowled for 20 while attempting a ramp shot against Victoria pacer Cameron McClure in a one-day game.

Smith, one of Australia’s greatest-ever batters, said Konstas still has time to refine his game but assured he is available to offer guidance if approached.

“My door’s always open, my phone’s always on,” Smith told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday. “Whenever he wants to talk batting, I love those chats and I’m happy to help wherever I can.”

While extending support, Smith also emphasized the importance of self-discovery in a young player’s development, recalling his own early struggles.

“I’m sure he’s speaking with various people — his batting coach and other experienced players — who can share valuable insights,” Smith said.

Despite Konstas’ current challenges, Smith praised his natural composure against fast bowling.

“From what I’ve seen, he’s got so much time when facing pace — that’s something you can’t teach,” Smith noted. “It’s a great foundation. There are areas he needs to improve, but he’s a talented player with a bright future.”
