Surging Tawi River sparks fear among Jammu residents

JAMMU: The roaring Tawi River, revered as Surya Putri, has left residents of Jammu gripped with fear.

Swelled by unprecedented rainfall, the river submerged hundreds of homes and farmlands, swept away structures and livestock, and displaced more than 6,000 people in just a single day.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Jammu received 296 mm of rain in 24 hours on Wednesday, surpassing the previous record of 272.6 mm set on August 9, 1973—ending a 52-year-old mark.
