India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer, who was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Sydney hospital after suffering a spleen laceration, is stable and recovering well, confirmed India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav on Tuesday.
“We spoke to him. On the first day, when we heard about his injury, I tried calling him, but he didn’t have his phone with him. I then spoke to our physio, Kamlesh, who said he was stable — though initially, nothing was certain,” Suryakumar said ahead of the first T20I against Australia.
“We’ve been in touch with him over the last two days. He’s been replying to messages, which means he’s doing better. The doctor is with him, and he’ll stay under supervision for a few more days. So far, everything looks positive,” he added.
Iyer sustained the injury while taking a catch to dismiss Australia’s Alex Carey during the third ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He was taken to a hospital immediately for scans, which revealed a spleen laceration — a more serious injury than the rib issue initially suspected — leading to his ICU admission.
The team management remains in regular contact with Iyer and continues to monitor his recovery closely.
Suryakumar also shared an update on Nitish Kumar Reddy, who missed the final ODI against Australia due to a left quadriceps injury picked up during the second match in Adelaide.
“He’s doing well. Yesterday, he did some running and batting in the nets. Today was an optional practice session, so he took a rest, but he still came to the ground for our team meeting to stay connected with the group,” Suryakumar said.
