Jammu-Srinagar Highway Partially Reopens for One-Way Traffic

Jammu: Authorities have allowed one-way traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway on Thursday due to slippery conditions in the Tharad section of Udhampur district.

The highway, the only all-weather road connecting Kashmir with the rest of India, was reopened on Wednesday after being closed for nine days. It had initially shut down on August 26 due to heavy rains, flash floods, and landslides. Though briefly reopened on August 30, it remained blocked for a total of 14 days.

According to a traffic advisory, “Subject to fair weather and good road conditions, only one-way movement of light motor vehicles (LMVs) from Jammu towards Srinagar will be allowed, starting from Nagrota.”

The advisory added that the Tharad section has not been fully restored. Light vehicles were permitted on a trial basis, but slippery roads led to traffic jams that required JCBs and loaders to clear vehicles throughout the day.

Movement of heavy vehicles remains restricted until the roadbed dries. Meanwhile, traffic is continuing via alternative routes, including the Mughal Road, Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumari Road, and Sinthan Road.
