Jammu: Panic gripped the Keerian Gandayal area under Lakhanpur police station on Wednesday after a routine checkpoint turned violent.
According to a senior police officer, a motorcycle coming from Punjab towards Jammu and Kashmir was signalled to stop, but the three youths on board allegedly opened fire on the police team and tried to escape.
During the ensuing chase, the motorcycle lost control and crashed near the Keerian Ghariyal bridge, leaving all three riders seriously injured. They were rushed to GMC Kathua, where one of them is reported to be in critical condition.
Police suspect the trio to be part of a drug trafficking network and involved in narcotics smuggling, the officer added.
