Rajouri/Jammu: Three mobile phones were recovered during a search operation at the high-security district jail in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district, officials said on Thursday.

Acting on specific inputs, multiple teams carried out searches inside the jail under the supervision of the prison administration. The seized devices, which were found without SIM cards, have been sent to a forensic laboratory for examination.

A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway to determine how the phones managed to enter the jail, which is guarded by a three-tier security system.

“The jail is equipped with digital jammers, and it is officially claimed that no mobile network functions inside or around the premises. However, the recovery and suspected use of phones from within the jail clearly suggest that the jammers may have been compromised,” a source said.

This is not the first such incident reported from J&K prisons. On July 24, a smartphone was recovered from an undertrial prisoner in Kot Bhalwal Central Jail on the outskirts of Jammu city. Earlier, on January 10 last year, a smartphone was seized from a jailed Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist. In July 2021, as many as 12 mobile phones, SIM cards, and other electronic gadgets were recovered from inmates in the same prison.
