Jammu: Police on Sunday said they have arrested three terrorist sympathisers in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir and recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition.

According to officials, the accused were overground workers of the banned Hizbul Mujahideen outfit, which was attempting to revive its activities in the border district.

“Fantastic investigation by JKP. Dogged determination and relentless effort led to the arrest of three terror sympathisers, along with the recovery of seven AK rifles (four seized earlier) and a large quantity of warlike stores in Poonch,” Inspector General of Police (Jammu) Bhim Sen Tuti posted on X.

The arrested men have been identified as Riyaz Ahmad, Tariq Sheikh, and Mohd Shafi. Ahmad and Sheikh were held on August 31 with two AK assault rifles, while Shafi was arrested later, leading to the recovery of more weapons during follow-up operations.

Officials said the seizure, which also included a significant quantity of ammunition, foiled Hizbul Mujahideen’s bid to revive militancy in the region.
