New Delhi: Highway toll plaza operators will receive compensation from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for three months to cover revenue losses arising from the introduction of the FASTag annual pass for private, non-commercial vehicles from August 15.

In a circular, NHAI said it has adopted a uniform compensation mechanism for toll collection agencies to address the impact of the new annual pass scheme, under which cars, vans, and jeeps can make unlimited trips across 200 toll plazas for a one-time payment of ₹3,000.

The arrangement applies to existing contracts as well as bids invited over the next three months. After that period, once plaza-wise annual pass usage data becomes available, the figures will be shared in bid documents, and no further compensation will be provided.

According to NHAI, the number of exempted vehicles will be determined using transaction data supplied by NPCI through IHMCL.

The FASTag annual pass, launched on August 15 across 1,150 toll plazas on national highways and expressways, has drawn strong response from road users. The pass can be purchased via the Rajmargyatra app or NHAI website, and is activated within two hours of payment.

NHAI collected ₹72,931 crore in toll revenue during 2024–25.
