Jammu: Heavy Rain Triggers Flood Alerts Across Jammu Division

Continuous heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours has led to a critical flood situation across Jammu Division, with several major rivers and their tributaries witnessing a sharp rise in water levels. The Meteorological Department has forecast further rainfall, heightening fears of flooding in low-lying areas.

The Madhopur Barrage has recorded an overflow exceeding 1,00,000 cusecs, submerging multiple villages along the Ravi River, including Bagthali, Massos Pur, Keerian Gandial, Barni, Dhanna, Dhanore, and Karyali. Authorities have urged residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions.

Ujh River Approaching Danger Levels
In Kathua district, the Ujh River is nearing critical levels at two monitoring points. At Panjtirthi, the discharge is 78,750 cusecs against a danger mark of 88,000 cusecs, while at Kathua it stands at 83,834 cusecs against a threshold of 95,099 cusecs. Officials warned that evacuation measures will be enforced if flows exceed 1.35 lakh cusecs at Panjtirthi and 1.44 lakh cusecs at Kathua.

Basanter River Crosses Danger Mark
The Basanter River in Samba district crossed the danger mark of 4.5 ft at 9 a.m. Tuesday, with levels continuing to rise. Local disaster management teams have been placed on standby in vulnerable areas.

Multiple Rivers Rising Simultaneously
Water levels in the Taranah River, Ujh River, Maggar Khad, Sahar Khad, Ravi River, and their tributaries in Kathua district are rising concurrently, increasing the risk of flash floods across large areas.

Roads and Connectivity Disrupted
Flash floods have washed away a section of the Padder road near Traith Nallah, disrupting surface connectivity. Sinthan Top and Margan Top remain closed to vehicular traffic due to ongoing rainfall and landslide risks.

Critical Alert for Tawi River
At Udhampur, the Tawi River crossed the evacuation level of 24.975 ft around 9:15 a.m., exceeding both the danger and evacuation thresholds. In Jammu city, the river remains below alert levels, though authorities anticipate it may cross flood warning marks in the coming hours.

Railway Services Affected
Rail operations have been disrupted due to heavy rains. Down-line services over bridge number 232 (PTKC–KNDI) have been suspended, while the up-line remains operational. Several trains are being run on a single track or diverted via the PTK–ASR route as a precaution.

Authorities have urged residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas to stay indoors, avoid riverbanks, and keep emergency supplies ready. Disaster response teams are on alert across Jammu, Kathua, Samba, and neighboring districts.
