Washington: Hours after accusing Chinese President Xi Jinping of “conspiring against” the United States while North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin attended China’s largest-ever military parade on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump commented on the state of US–China relations, describing his personal ties with Chinese leadership as “very good.”
Speaking later at the White House during a bilateral meeting with the President of Poland, Trump expressed disappointment over Xi Jinping’s speech at the parade, noting that the Chinese leader did not acknowledge the US role in supporting China during its struggles for freedom.
Referring to China’s massive military parade marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, Trump called the event “very impressive” and “beautiful,” suggesting it was staged to capture his attention.
“When they did what they did, I thought it was a beautiful ceremony; it was very impressive, but I understood the reason behind it: they were hoping I was watching, and I was,” Trump said. “My relationship with all of them is very good, and we are going to find out how good it is over the next week or two.”
Trump added, “I think we helped China very much when they talk about freedom, and I don’t believe the US was acknowledged for that support. I heard President Xi last night, and I think the US should have been mentioned since we helped China very much.”
Earlier, China held the military parade to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, with Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un attending as Beijing showcased its military strength. During the event, Xi Jinping described China as “unstoppable” while reiterating the country’s commitment to peaceful development.
Ahead of the parade, the US, via a post on Truth Social, accused Xi Jinping of “conspiring against” America as Kim and Putin joined the celebrations.
China observes September 3 as the anniversary of its victory over Japan in 1945, marking the end of World War II.
Trump, posting on social media during the parade, wrote: “May President Xi and the wonderful people of China have a great and lasting day of celebration. Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un, as you conspire against the United States of America.”
He added, “The big question is whether President Xi will acknowledge the massive support and ‘blood’ that the United States gave to China to help secure its freedom from a very hostile invader. Many Americans died in China’s quest for victory and glory. I hope they are rightfully honored and remembered for their bravery and sacrifice.”
