Washington: US President Donald Trump expressed confidence Tuesday that he could bring an end to the war in Gaza, stating that he had “got it settled” and was “going to get that done.”
“We got it, I think, settled. We’ll see. Hamas has to agree. If they don’t, it’s going to be very tough on them, but it is what it is. All the Arab and Muslim nations have agreed, and Israel has agreed. It’s amazing—it just came together,” Trump said while addressing over 800 senior military officers in Virginia.
The proposed Gaza peace plan calls for a temporary technocratic government, with Israel committing not to annex the Strip and ensuring that no residents are displaced. If accepted, the agreement would immediately end the war and mandate the return of all captives, living or deceased, within 72 hours.
Speaking to reporters before his address, Trump said he would give Hamas “three or four days” to accept the proposal.
“We’re just waiting for Hamas. They’re either going to accept it or not. If they don’t, it’s going to be a very sad outcome. Our demands are simple: we want the hostages back immediately and some basic good behavior. You don’t get simpler than that. Every country in the Middle East has signed on. This has never been done before. Gaza is part of the bigger picture,” he added.
Trump reiterated his warning that if Hamas refuses the deal, he would allow Israel to take “whatever action they have to.”
“We have killed about 25,000 Hamas members. They have paid a big price for October 7. Their leadership has been killed three times over. We hope Hamas can live a calm life—but if not, Israel will act. If this works, it could be one of the greatest achievements ever: real peace in the Middle East,” he said.
The conflict began nearly two years ago, on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. About 48 captives are believed to remain, with around 20 still alive.
